1. The original form of -ate1, surviving in a number of words, as commissariat (1), concordat, diplomat, format, quadrat, secretariat (also -ate). Most of these are loan-words from French.
2. Representing the 3rd pers. sing. pres. tense ending of Latin verbs of the first conjugation, as ægrotat, habitat.
